House 40 Rules
Version 2
[Some of you might remember a certain set of house rules going up prior to Yuri's disappearance. Otonashi isn't exactly second-in-command, but Hinata is emotionally out of commission, Naoi had already taken the burden of announcing her departure, and Noda is MIA.

Oh, and Yotsuba is too young to be making rules.. even though the potential for comedy is there.]

1. No loud music, shouting, or being loud after 11pm. There’s a little girl trying to sleep! It doesn’t matter if you stay up late, but keep the noise down.

2. Keep your eroge and other 18+ fare safely put away! If it’s left out in the living room, I’ll confiscate it. Yotsuba shouldn’t have to see that and neither should any visitors!

3. Everyone follows the rules. Even you, Noda..!

4. Please?

5. Try to keep your rooms clean.

6. Clean up after yourself in the kitchen.

7. Don’t leave your underwear in the bathroom… Keep that clean too.

8. The house is everyone’s responsibility, not just one person’s! Especially not just mine.

9. DON’T KILL EACH OTHER. I don’t care that it “didn’t matter” in the afterlife, it always matters!

10. Don’t make medieval traps! This includes BUT ISN'T LIMITED TO hammer traps, falling ceilings, collapsing floors, and spike pits! If you saw it in a JRPG dungeon, you can't make it in the house! (We can play an RPG instead.)

11. Don’t train in the living room! Keep it to your own room if you insist on doing it in the house…

12. Yotsuba: Make sure you go to school and do well. If you do, I’ll make sure to pick you up a gift at the end of each week. Oh, and find an adult that isn’t Noda if someone is bothering you!

13. Continue respecting Hayate.

14. If you want to set up an in-house visit, mark it either on the white board that Yuri set up or somewhere we can see it. It's better to let everyone know.

15. Don’t measure yourselves in the living room… Why is this even a problem..?! I won’t tell you that you can’t do it privately, because I know that’ll make you just want to do it more.
Noda, this means you… I've heard about your "competitions" and I'm telling now, I don't care..!

16. House meetings are still held on Sunday.

17. RESPECT EVERYONE'S PRIVACY. Knock before entering rooms unless it is an emergency! If I see you barging in, I'll... yell at you!

18. No throwing furniture, halberds, weapons, people, or… goldfish…

19. Why is there a goldfish named after me again..?

20. Okay! Please follow the rules. They aren’t even that hard to follow, you guys…

21. Don't discount me because I'm not Yuri! I don't think I should have to put on a bow and thigh-highs to enforce a rule around here...

[Well, there is a distinct lack of Yuri-specific rules. Like it or not, Yuri Nakamura is no longer in Luceti. He's in no rush to replace her, but the acceptance and healing process has to start somewhere. So, he might as well be the one to take initiative.]

I think that should do for now, unless I missed something... Any, uh... suggestions? [No punishment games though! Otonashi isn't much of a disciplinarian.]

[Noda had been gone for about a month. Perhaps more, he didn't have a precise date of when he had left the house to do some training.

And then he was lost in the woods for who knew how long.

So he did not hear of Yuri leaving the place, Hinata being concerned with Yuri being gone, Naoi's journal post announcing about it... None at all. So when he finally made his way back to the house to see these new set of rules, he had to stop and stare at the rules for the longest time.]

[He stops mid-stride, just about ready to head to the kitchen for a drink. Quite possibly some coffee, which would of course do nothing for his thirst but everything for his taste buds, so... priorities.

And then he sees someone examining the new ruleset.]

N-Noda?! Wh- you came back?!

[Noda has no clue why you are so surprised to see him back, but that didn't matter as he whirls around to point at the new set of rules with his halberd axe.]

What is the meaning of this?! Why are the rules rewritten in someone else's handwriting?! Did Yurippe consent to this?!

[Noda, why did you have to show up NOW? You couldn't have come a week ago, oh no! YOU HAD TO CHOOSE NOW.]

W-well... haha, funny thing about that..! [NOT FUNNY AT ALL] Not exactly, but―! T-these are more lenient, haha..! See, ahhh, Yuri isn't really... here... and I thought it would be a good starting point―!

[Is any of this softening the blow?! IS IT?]

[You should know by now that Noda picks his time and place extremely carefully! ~~As in not at all~~]

How is any of this funny?

[Because it's not in Noda's eyes. He moves his halberd to point at Otonashi now.]

What do you mean, Yurippe isn't here anymore!?

[Noda, he was trying not to break the news too harshly. Now Otonashi is just nervous.]

I didn't mean... haha...aa.. [Why did he have to get that halberd back?!] Noda, wait, don't do this now...!

Yuri, she... ahh, she was sent back home. So I... rewrote the house rules. [Maybe it's a knee-jerk reaction, but he takes a step back.] I think it's in our best interests to... try to move forward.

Sent back home? By who, that Mal-something group? [Can you hear the anger dripping from his voice? The blade gets closer to Otonashi for some reason.]

Was there a reason for this? Did Yurippe say anything before she left?

T-the Malnosso? I don't know, I think so..! [Oh god Noda, stop. Otonashi isn't even armed right now.]

N-no..? I never got the chance to talk with her! I'm just doing what I can for those of us who are still here!

[Noda stares at the redhead for a long, long time before he lowers his weapon, giving a large sigh as he moves over to the couch to flop down, scratching his head with slight frustration before setting his weapon down.]

So she left.

[He doesn't say anything else as he leans over, arms resting against his legs, drained of any energy he seemed to have just a moment ago. He was now going through something similar to what Hinata's been feeling at the very least. Except...he wasn't exactly the talkative one either, so he was going to mull over this in his head as he sad in his seat.]

... Ah. [That is all he can say, all the strength he can summon to affirm Noda's conclusion.]

She left all of us notes. You'd probably like the one she left me... She said I was, uh... [A dumbass, but he can't bring himself to say it. Otonashi may not feel comfortable enough to risk embracing Noda right now, but nothing stops him from trying to assist: even in this small way.]

Uh, stupid for forgetting to see her before she left.

[He lets a small laugh out as he hears the other talk.]

You have not even seen her before she left? [Then again, he was lost in the woods when she had left, so he wasn't in the position to say much other than that.

He goes quiet after that, not sure what to say. He was actually scared to ask about the note she had left for him, regardless of how curious he was of what his own note said.]

Ah... no. No, she had gone off alone by the time I got here. [Asking him to be completely at ease would be asking too much, but he is willing to entertain that Noda might be docile. For now.

The note he received from Yuri was not terribly personal, so he figures he can offer the small kindness of sharing it (even if it is at his own expense). He retreats to his room, but returns moments later with a folded slip of paper. The handwriting is indeed Yuri's:

Someone told me you were here on my way out. Did you forget to say hi or something? Dumbass.]

Here. If you want yours... I'll ask Naoi for it.

[He can't completely hide how down he feels. He wasn't expecting to meet up with Yuri after passing on from the after life, and when he was finally able to meet once more, he didn't exactly have a decent conversation other than the first day. To think that they won't be able to see Yuri was a heavy blow for him.

It takes a little time for him to notice Otonashi had left and came back as he gets handed the note Yuri had written for Otonashi, and takes the paper from the redhead to take a look at it. It was Yuri's handwriting, all right, and he couldn't help but let another laugh out. What other reaction could he make in this situation?]

So what's your excuse for not seeing Yurippe?

[He's actually feeling grateful that Otonashi's offering to talk to Naoi for the note, last time they talked he was hypnotized by those eyes... Not that he would openly admit it to Otonashi, nope.]

Mine? I showed up late... and then I lost two days. Mister Layton said he forgot that time too, so it had to be more than just me... [Indeed, thanks for that, fourth wall event.]

Then Hinata found me. Then you, then Naoi... but not Yuri. [... Is that true? Some people treat me like they know me. I don't even have my own memories back. What am I supposed to believe?!]

Uhm... at least not that I remember. And you--you were lost, weren't you?

[Noda doesn't say anything as he heard Otonashi talk some more. There was no denying at being lost. Who knew that the forest would be so big?]

I had gone into the woods to do some training. [He doesn't have to say anymore, did he? He does notice Otonashi thinking about something, but he doesn't try to question it. It was probably something ~~wussy~~ he didn't need to know anyways.]

Right... U-uh. You remember all of it, though..? [Because memories seem to be an issue around here. Hinata has different memories than Otonashi, Yuri had different memories than both of them... Everything about memories and timelines is a mess.]

Naoi... er, he said that I was already here. [He shivers at this. Not remembering Luceti still bothers him... scares him, even.] And some people seem to... treat me that way. So maybe I did meet Yuri..? And maybe — uh, if you don't exactly remember what happened out there — maybe you saw Yuri off. [It's a weak theory, but perhaps a small comfort.]

I remember all of it, wandering around in the woods for who knows how long-- [And then he pauses as he listens to Otonashi talk, and his usual glare comes back onto his face. Never mind that possible memory issue, but...]

...So you were here before? And you don't remember it?

[He's looking at you with that look, Otonashi. Does it feel familiar?]

Ahh... you didn't make landmarks..? [Though maybe it wouldn't have helped.]

That's what I've heard. I don't know—or remember—anything about it... W-why? [Yes, he knows that look. But what else can he really say?!]

Gh... [Point taken. But Noda never considers a lot of things. He leaves that part alone as he focuses more on the latter.]

So you've met Yurippe and don't remember? Are you making your amnesia an excuse again?

[Can you hear the growl in his voice?]

[At least Noda isn't refuting him on this particular point. It's a small victory.]

Wh—

An excuse?! It has never been an excuse—! Why would I make that up?! Do you seriously think I like this..!?

Hmph, how should I know if you'd like it? I don't go forgetting important things like you do.

I don't do it on purpose! I hate it, I've always hated it! [He looks away for a second, stifling any number of harsh words he could direct at Noda. Seems like the other boy actually hit a nerve.]

W-why should I care what you think anyway?! You're just a jerk! A jerk who can't handle pi or—or even see when he's being used! [Okay, now this is just getting ridiculous. It's too bad neither of them seem to know when to quit, though...]

[Otonashi you gotta try harder than that. Noda gives a blank look back at you as a reaction.]

And? I accept that I'm a moron, and if I'm being useful to Yurippe in any way, I could care less.

[Which makes him feel sad again, but he wasn't going to mull over it so much.]

You— ... How can you accept being told you're an idiot so easily?! [Noda, ever comfortable with his stupidity.] B-besides, I didn't say that... exactly.

And... [He trails off, trying to carefully formulate his words in the interest of not being impaled on a halberd.]

At least I would not hide behind pathetic excuses of not being an idiot when it's the truth.

[And he looks so proud at that.]
